Sri Lankan team attacked in Lahore

The Sri Lankan team was targetted by armed gunmen today injuring several of its top players




Armed gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan national team today injuring six players and killing five security personnel. Those injured in the attack include Tharanga Paranavitana, Thilan Samaraweera, Chaminda Vaas, Mahela Jayawardene, Ajanta Mendes and Kumara Sangakara.

Also injured in the attack is fourth umpire Ehsaan Reza. The attack came while the team was being transported to Lahore’s Gadaffi Stadium said sports Minister Gamini Lokuge said. Of those injured, Samaraweera’s condition is said to be critical. He was shot on his chest while team mate Sangakara was hit on the shoulder. Senior player Muttiah Muralidharan, however escaped unhurt.

Rocket launchers, Kalashnikovs and grenades were used in the attack. The cavalcade that escorted the players also came under heavy fire, killing five security personnel. Following the attack Sri Lanka has recalled all its players and cancelled its tour of Pakistan.
